Charlemagne crowned emperor
AD 800 · St Peter's Basilica, Rome

In short
On Christmas night in AD 800, in St Peter's Basilica in Rome, Pope Leo III placed a crown on Charlemagne's head. He was proclaimed Emperor of the Romans: after more than three centuries the West had an emperor again. The empress in Constantinople and her court were not at all pleased, because they saw themselves as the only heirs of Rome. The bond between pope and emperor would become one of the great themes of the whole Middle Ages.
Why it matters From here the Holy Roman Empire would grow, lasting in various forms until 1806.
