In short
At the end of 2019 a new coronavirus appeared in China, causing a disease called COVID-19 that passes easily from person to person. In a few months it spread around the world, and on 11 March 2020 the World Health Organization declared a pandemic. Italy was one of the first European countries to be hit: for months schools stayed closed and lessons took place online. Doctors and nurses worked non-stop, and at the end of 2020 vaccinations began.
Why it matters It showed how connected we are and how much scientific research and helping one another matter.
