about 230 million years ago · Pangaea (fossils in Argentina and Brazil)

In short
The first dinosaurs appeared in the Triassic and were just one of many groups of land reptiles. The oldest definite fossils come from Argentina and Brazil. Many were small and walked on two legs. After further extinctions they multiplied into plant-eaters and hunters of very different sizes.
