The first mammals
about 225 million years ago · Pangaea

In short
The first mammals were small animals, rather like shrews, that lived alongside the first dinosaurs. They had teeth of different shapes and replaced them only once, just like us. They probably had fur and fed their young on milk, even though fur and milk are not preserved in fossils. For millions of years they mostly stayed small.
Why it matters From these modest creatures come all mammals, including humans, whales and bats.
