The World Wide Web
1991 · CERN, Geneva, Switzerland

In short
At CERN in Geneva, the great European physics laboratory, scientists from many countries struggled to share documents. In 1989 the English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee proposed a system of pages joined to each other by links, which could be viewed with a program called a browser. In 1991 the World Wide Web was opened to people outside CERN too. In 1993 CERN made it free for everyone, with no fees to pay.
Why it matters The web made the internet easy to use: today billions of people browse from one linked page to another.
