Formation of the Solar System
about 4.6 billion years ago · The Solar System

In short
About 4.6 billion years ago a cloud of gas and dust began to spin and flatten into a disc. In the centre the young Sun lit up; in the disc, grains and rocks collided and clumped together. From these materials came planets, moons, asteroids and comets.
Why it matters It explains why the planets orbit in the same system and share a common origin.
