In short
Homo habilis lived in East Africa between about 2.4 and 1.4 million years ago. It had a slightly bigger brain than the australopithecines, and its name means ‘handy man’ because for a long time it was thought to have made the first tools. Today scientists are still debating who really invented them.
Why it matters It is one of the first members of our own genus, Homo.
